a bad knock sensor keeps the timing from being retarded,it will not advance the timing.knocking on the block and watching for the timing to be retarded is a good idea though.if it has a distributor, not coil packs, you should be able to set base timing and the computer makes its adjustments from there.beware there are some vehicles with distributors that only have one acceptable position.
