I want to give credit to 91-240's (whatever were his parents thinking?!) suggestion of using a shunt + voltmeter.
Myself, I know about this much || about it. By my brother the EE drew this scheme out for me when wiring the boat I built. It is classic solution and NOT expensive, and not subject to the drawbacks of an ammeter, like the necessity of passing all curent through it.
FWIW, you might catch Nigel Calder's huge, detailed, no-B.S. book on (12 v.) boat systems at your library: "Boatowner's mechanical and electrical manual : how to maintain, repair, and improve your boat's essential systems."
