This sounds like a classic poor ground situation at the left hand light assembly.
The engine cutting out may be caused by the ignition power stage which is in this area sharing a ground connection with the lights.
If putting a voltmeter on the the power stage ground with high beam turned on results in a voltage reading there`s your problem.
