Headliner question 700 1986

I may need new clips. A couple were missing, and one came off when I attempted to push the plastic piece back. It is not too far forward, just too fat! Do you think you put the plastic piece in place with the clips on the piece or on the car body? At this point I am thinking of skipping the plastic piece entirely as it isn't too obvious that it is missing.
