Had a similar thing happen on my 16v. I found the problem by dumping water on the distributor and it started missing out. I replaced dist. smeared dielectric grease on all ignition connections and sprayed ignition sealer on all the wires. Plug wires are $60 and I'm a cheapass. Ultimately my distributor was cracked, and that's all.
