It is much easier to test for a signal from the sender. This can be intercepted at the speedo plug while it is disconnected. Look for an AC pulsing signal across 2 of the wires the 3rd wire is a ground. Itincreases in speed and voltage as the diff turns. Voltage will start out low (around 1V or so if i remember correctly and rises a bit as speed increases but the speedo looks at frequency and ignores the increasing voltage. I have tested for this signal with wheel in the air and while driving. Use an analog meter set to low AC voltage range and you should see the needle moving.
