Sunroof 700 1987

On my 87 740 sedan the sunroof is sheilded by a smoke-colored deflector. I hate it and want to remove it but my father said its there for a reason, can anyone tell me why its there and whether I can remove it without permanent results (for example, if it looks bad without it, I can just clip it back on.) We rarely use the sunroof but I'm attempting to improve its appearence. Please help!
