Volvo is very explicit about NOT replacing the filter in the trans unless the pan has to be dropped for some other service that requires it (TV cable, etc)
The primary reason for this is, with newer fluids (Dexron III variety) transmissions make significantly less debris than they used to. The difference really is amazing, and most transmission pans are virtually empty when you take them apart. I don't want to outright tell you that you should NOT change the filter, but I have never done it in a shop setting (Volvo says don't drop the pan...) nor have I done it to my own cars.
