That's what mine does. I had to re-hab a recycled antenna, and learn how they work at the same time. Apparently the clunk-clunk is required to cause the internal workings to switch over to the other direction.

Mine would retract down inside the housing about an inch, a guaranteed water catcher. I was able to concoct a solution, works fine.
