Distrubutor Housing Cracked when installing. What did I do wrong?

Intstall with the cap off. Oil the O-ring. Slip it into the head, then rotate the rotor till the notch on the dist slips into the slot on the back of the cam. The dist should slip in with minimal effort if the O-ring is the corect one.
