I had a similar problem with one of the SUs on my 544. I'm sure they need a complete rebuild, but I found that one of the reasons it was sticking was that the vacuum chamber wasn't tightened down properly (i.e. one of the 3 screws was tightened down far tighter than the others) causing it to misalign with the piston. So I guess my suggestion is to loosen each of the three vacuum chamber screws a half turn or so and make sure you have free clearance for the piston, prior to carefully tightening them down, hopefully keeping everything properly aligned. This wouldn't be an issue with a new carb, but we should all be used to having 30-40 year old carb bodies by now, right?
