Windshield Installation 200 1983

I am trying to remember back a couple of years to when I replaced the glass on my '84 project.

I used urethene glue, but put the byutl-rubber rope caulk in there anyway as a sort of "backstop" for the urethane which I thoght might be too flowable to stay in place.

I beleive the correct spacing the the glass (therefore the buytl-rubber caulk) is 3/8", but I really don't remember.

During that time I wrote to some guy who has a web site about windshield replacement. He crrected me on the thickness and told me to get eithere 3/8 or 11/16. But I can't remember which is correct.

The idea is to off-set the glass from the body surround to allow for the trim to mate flush with the body. I don't see why you couldn't measure the depth of the pinchweld area, subtract the thickness of the glass and calculate the remaining depth, which should be the caulk.

You will also need to use a setting block or two below the bottom edge to help cented the glass vertically in the opening.

I bought a 3M buytl-ruber kit at a retail parts store but the block was missing.

Think I used a smell piece of wood. Whatever, use something just to get and even spacing below and above within the opening. Same goes for side-to-side.

I think I used a laundry pen to make marks from the old glass right onto the body where I wanted the new glass to line up. Measured these maerks to the respective edge, removed the old glass then put measured markings onto the new glass.

As for the clips, I bought mine from Brickboard sponsor for $17 for the kit. Notice you will get mostly white clips and six green clips. These greenies have sliders on them. They go on the sides, or vertical edges of the new glass. the sliders allow the width of the chrome trim to adjust a little side-to-side.

If I recall, I beleive I mounted the glass, then slipped on the clips.

No, that doesn't sound right, because how would I get then unto the bottom edge where there is not enough clearance.

No harm in mounting them befoe installing the glass, unless you think they'll interfere with placing the glass where you want it.

I had my wive help lift the new glass into place. No need for suction cups and such. Just use those guide markings.

Finally, be sure to pt either (or both as I did) the caulk or urethane along the bottom edge of the glass before seting it. I sisn;t do that because I thought I could add the glue later (somethng about not knowing where on the glass I needed to put the stuff). Well, I couldn't get in there later because the angle doesn't allow this. Good thing I at least had the caulk there.
