reverse gear problem 700 1986

Reverse gear is suddenly unavailable on my 740 turbo wagon with manual transmission. I assume that there is a spring that should be connected with the collar on the gear shift that has broken or come loose. My Chilton manual doesn't address this area in any detail, though they do have a somewhat unhelpful diagram of the shift assembly. I would like to remedy this problem myself if it's not too challenging. I now have 328,000 miles on my car and it is going as strong as when I bought it with 90,000 miles 12 years ago. I have done a few repair myself over the years - most recently replacing the big hose from the air mass meter to the turbo, which was a piece of cake. Any advise? Thanks, Steve Blackmer
