Composite leaf spring on V-90 S90-V90

A few lines down there was a comment and question regarding the composite leaf spring on the rear of a V-90 and why Volvo used it.

Glass springs weren't chosen because they're cheaper as suggested by the poster. 1963 and up Corvettes use transverse leaf springs on the rear. Up to about 1980 multi leaf steel springs were used, and after that Chevrolet switched to composite because they are lighter (at least 30 pound weight savings), exhibit less friction than multileaf steel, and can withstand millions of cycles without fatiguing or sagging or breaking (as steel does).

Pricewise, the "glass" springs sell for about three times the price that steel cost (for Corvettes at least), so low cost is not a probable cost, either, for Volvo's choice.
