'84 240 sluggish and backfiring 200 1984

Hi. I've got a '84 240 a few months ago with some problems. At startup, idling fluctuates and stalls unless I depress on the gas pedal. After warming up idling fluctuates. From a dead stop, acceleration is sluggish for a few seconds, then kicks in fine -it backfires sometimes. What could be the problem? I do many fixes myself, but never worked on a volvo before. I may just bring it to a local garage, but I want to know the possible problems so I won't get ripped off. I would appreciate any comments/tips. Thanks.
