Sounds like it could be a flaky fuel pump relay. I had that exact same problem on my 85 240 a few years back. You can either resolder the relay (info on this is available in the 700 FAQ section) or, pick one up for a few bucks at a bone yard or buy a new one. If you want to save some buck on a new one, I highly recommend ordering one online rather than wasting money at the dealer..., also convenient and cheap. I have been very satisfied with www.newandusedvolvoparts.com
