The ignition coil on my 240 Turbo is on the driver's side fender. Dunno about where it would be on a 740. But, I do know the distributor is on the back of the head (easy to spot as it should have five wires coming out of it, four should end up towards the RH side of the car where the spark plugs are). So all you need to do is follow the fifth wire on the cap (the one in the center) and it'll end up at the coil. With this setup (Bosch) your distributor cap is red.
Actually, I misspoke. You may have the Rex/Regina system. Ack. In that case I believe the distributor (again with five wires terminating at the cap) should be (at least this is where I think it is) towards the front of the engine. You still want to follow that coil wire to the coil. The coil wire should be somewhat self-evident as it won't attach to a spark plug.
It wouldn't hurt to pull the fuel pump fuse(s) either so you don't flood the engine.
