tranny swap ? 1981

i have a 1981 GLE V6 4 door, with a bw 55(now with no forward gears).what would be a more common replacement for it? hopefully with OD!!or would a diesel work?i think the starter is on wrong side like the diesel. I need to do this as chap as possible!
