I think he'd better go back and regroup (or maybe you didn't interpret properly what you heard). Mobil 1 uses PAO Group IV and apparently some Group V base stock, as does AMSOIL.
I believe QS and most others use Group III (hydrocracked petroleum) as base stock. None that I've ever heard of use recycled oil in any way to formulate stocks for their synthetics.
