oil cooled pistons

are pistons cooled by jets of oil sprayed from below. They began appearing in B230 engines sometime in the 1994 model year, though it would be a mistake to assume that all cars made from 1994 onwards have them. Besides, the Volvos without oil-cooled pistons do just fine anyway, so unless you're planning on tuning this engine up to 300hp+, don't lose too much sleep over it.
