This only answers your question in a roundabout way, mostly it's an excuse for me to run off at the mouth.
I found an old (93) Pioneer 12 disk changer at a garage sale for 5 bucks. It was missing the remote and cartridge. I did a usenet search on the model number and actually found a guy who had the same unit but was missing his wiring harness. Managed to buy his whole unit for $25. This unit is FM modulated, you don't get quite the clarity you would with a direct-in unit but the beauty of it is you just need to split the antenna cable and it works with your existing FM receiver. Also, you don't lose the ability to play your old cassettes. If you don't need audiophile quality sound out of the CD player, you can get a new 6 disk FM modulated changer for less than $200.
