Intermitent cold start problem ('85 244 Turbo)

It restarts pretty much everytime- I can't remember it not in fact (but that doesn't mean it didn't a couple times). I do sometimes smell fuel when it doesn't start, and in the case of yesterday (last time I tried to start it and it wouldn't) on my second try at starting it when I turned the key on but didn't crank I heard the main fuel pump, is that right?
At this point I'd lose too much if I sold it as is I think :)
