Tranny fluid level question on a 92-960

The method I used was to run the stick through all the gears, place into neutral on a level surface and take a reading with the engine running. I can get a consistent reading when the car is hot (near the full hot mark). But when the engine is cold the level does not register on the dipstick and I wander if the noise I hear when cold is cavitation. I will check for bubbles. Thanks.
