I believe the part that came out is the outer bearing inner race. The outer bearing being the one farthest out on the axle from the car centerline.
The volvo book I have (88-, doesn't say 90 which I thought had a sealed hub assembly) says that race is put into the hub with the hub off the car.
Then you put the entire hub back øn the stub axle and measure the distance from the outer hub casting tø the outer bearing and look for a minimum 23mm. If it's not, then the rear bearing outer race is improperly set in the hub, fix that and try again.
