I found my '96 965 this summer with 102,000, garage kept (mostly) with excellent paint, no dings, overall excellent leather interior, new tires, full cold weather package (limited slip/heated seats/OAT display,Volvo tow package installed but never used, etc.) for under $7K.
It runs great, and had maintenance history (got most of it by calling the servicing Volvo dealer), and is as clean as a whistle (OK, it has one dime sized spot on the cargo area carpet under the optional rubber protective tray.). It had one instrument bulb out, and I put front rotors on it ($75); otherwise it was damned near perfect. Oh, yes, the climate control is off by a few degrees, which so far I compensate for by dialing 76 deg when I really want 70 deg.
I say this not to boast (Which is why I didn't use my usual screen name). but to tell you not to bite too early. That car doesn't sound bad, but it's no screaming deal. I rejected several 900 Series cars ('92-'95) that were priced between $4000 and $7500 and which were as nice as mine, but I was waiting for a '96 wagon with the desired options in white, which I finally found (On ebay if you can believe that.).
My point is not that you might want a 6 cyl car like I was looking for (A 945T would have done nicely in reality, had one popped up), but that it's worth looking around a lot rather than making do early. Maybe turbo cars are so rare that they have to be bought however/whenever they are found (I don't see many), in which case you gotta' do what you gotta' do, but it's sue woth some searching before enriching a dealer that sounds a mite of what he's got there.
