Can I upgrade to auto tensioner?

I don't know what my car has. If it is a manual tensioner can I upgrade to auto? I heard that it could be done but not verified.

BTW bought seals from volvo dealer; valve cover gasket, rear 'half circle' seal and 2 o rings total: $45.00, ouch.
