Karl: The speculation is fine as far as it goes, but understand that the replies from McD and Tom presume that this is the problem. I'd suggest, from first-hand experience, that you might, more likely, be experiencing the initial failure of the AMM, which will make the car react EXACTLY as you describe. Personally, I'd find it hard to believe that the car would start stalling in the manner you note, due to the plug gap issue, especially since I'm going to presume that it had been running for a while with the gap incorrectly set. Better start searching for a replacement AMM (make sure the numbers match). The similar problems with my '87, were absolutely cured by the replacement with a used unit. Happy hunting.
