What does your wire harness look like? The 87 was (I think) the last year of the bad wire harness, if it's decomposed, that would explain what's going on. Check the wire at the grey connector at the fire while just behind the intake manifold, if you see bare wire there, that's an issue. There are other tell tale spots on the harness but I think that one is the easiest to spot.
