Engine Idles rough when start - 83 - 240

I am new to Volvo's. I bought an 83, 240. I changed the plugs and plug wires. We had a cold snap and now the car starts, but idles rough. If I try to move to soon it will die. I am pretty sure I set the gap well. I have not checked the distributor cap. The Haynes says it may be the coolant temperature sensor. Does that sound right? Any information would be helpful. I am thinking about buying 1987 240 wagon. If anyone has any insight on that model, please comment also.
