I have 2 88 740 GLE wagons with AW-70 A.T. NON-TURBO 8 valve 2.3 litres. My silver wagon currently has 365,000 miles on it. I average 28-30 MPG no problem. My average speed is 75-85 MPH, and at times 90 plus MPH. Steady consistent speed! I have no oil leaks or any other problems. And the tranny is extremely smooth, the tranny floats into each gear! Both cars get nothing but the best. 98% of my driving is on the hwy (1,200-1,400 miles weekly). These wagons are solid, safe, comfortable and extremely reliable! Turbos just require a little more extra care, 335,000 miles, wow! That is very good for a turbo. My second wagon has only 175,000 miles on it. These cars fly. Once you get going you are gone! Also I find that super unleaded gasoline, in addition to very strict maintenance really affects the longevity and particularly these performance of the vehicles. Avoid jack rabbit starts, and just take care of it. In fact do some hwy driving at least once a week, more if you can. These motors are so practical, and serious work horses! Man can they climb a hill!
I drive my Volvos more than my 96 nissan maxima SE (173,000 miles) which is a wonderful car (brought new), but these Volvos are really incredible!
