Dark brown? I don't really know. Are you overfilling the engine oil?

As Kenric has pointed out, there is not actually a flame trap in your PCV system, but the rest of the PCV system is there, on top of a black plastic box that sits on the side of the block under the intake manifold. As he suggests, take a look at the FAQ for more info. The system does need to be cleaned out periodically, and that is what I meant by the flame trap.
