My daughter broke that piece on her 86 240 and I never could get a clear description of how to get the shift knob off to replace it. One guy said to tie a sandwich bag over the shift knob and knock it upward by putting an open-ended wrench under it on the shaft and hitting the wrench right under the shift knob from below with a hammer. He said the bag is to catch flying parts. I never did get up the nerve to try the technique. I'll look at it again now that I have had success taking apart the shifter on my manual transmission. I'll let you know if I see anything I missed before.
