If you're not having other problems, ignore the noise.
My '78 main pump made a LOT of racket, even after I replaced both pumps.
Expensive lesson.
As far as I can tell, the main pump(s) howled for ~300K miles before I sold the car.
I've had 2 in-tank pumps fail, and the problem was decisive in both cases: the car would barely run with less than 1/2 tank of gas.
