No Spark Condition 700 1985

My 740 quit sparking. I had no spark at the coil. and randomoly lost voltage to the coil. a service tech told me to check the ...... I forgot its name. Power control??? but its a 1 1/2" X 3" flat part mounted on the drivers side fender. I put on a used one and it fixed me right up.
