Another example of why you should check all the simple stuff before assuming the worst...
Performing one final check of my alternator connections before I was going to pull it, I discovered that there was only 0.8V at the B+ terminal on the back of the alternator. I hadn't tested the B+ or ground wires earlier because they looked fine and hadn't been tampered with in years. Well, considering the B+ wire runs to the starter lug and directly back to the (+) terminal of the battery, I expected something more like 12V. I wiggled the connection and got 6V. Wiggled some more and got 8V. A bit more and got 10V. Again, and I was back down to 8V. So I've got a really crappy connection here, and that must have been the source of all my problems!
