Infamous OD solenoid

1. The solenoid is working because I was under the car (it was on a lift) listening while the mechanic was in the car engaging it. If the solenoid engages does it mean the tranny is the problem or could the solenoid be bad (plugged up etc.) even though I hear it engaging?

2. Is there a good way to clean the solenoid area before I remove it? The car is clean but I am nervous about dirt particles getting in the tranny since a dealer told me this could lead to serious problems.

2. The dealer that changed the rear engine seal is different from the mechanic I am now going too. I find it hard to believe it was anything more than an oversight (not replacing the PCV valve) as they had to know it would start leaking again immediately. But you never know.

3. I will replace the solenoid next with a new one. Is the brand that sells on the web for $150 (German made) good enough or should I buy the Volvo brand ($250)? How about buying a used one for $50?

4. If the tranny is the problem would it be wiser to have my mechanic put in a used one instead of paying a tranny shop $$1,500 to repair?
