Thanks for all the replies to my inquiry. Here's a message I got that hopefully answers the question... thanks to gregg from the Volvo Club of British Columbia.

My daughter drives a 2 dr 122 and mounted a Thule, gutter gripping, locking
roof rack, equiped with rails for 2 mountain bikes. She researched it
thoroughly and chose Thule over the others. The rack is black and the rails
are silver and black. It was fitted carefully in order that the opening
doors did not interfere with the gutter brackets. This was purchased Summer
2002.
