I had good luck with an offset box end wrench for the top strut nut. Harbor Freight Tools has a pretty good inexpensive set (about $12, I think).
I can't remember the name for the wrench used on the collar nut at the top of the strut tube, but I can describe it to you. It looks like a quarter-circle with a handle on one side and a crooked finger on the other. The finger fits into the slots cut every 90 degrees into the collar nut, the quarter-circle lies snugly against the edge of the collar nut, and you grab the handle to loosen the collar nut. Works like a charm. About $10 at a local tool jobber. Alternatively, most bicycle shops have an equivalent tool: look at the pedal bearings on your (or your kid's) racing bike. Maybe the bike shop would rent you their tool for the weekend.
