Flywheel Sensor

Hi all:

I have a screw in Sensor on the Engine of my 1986 740 Turbo Wagon with the M46 4 speed & OD. This sensor detects 2 dimples on the Flywheels front face. I thought the Hall Sensor in the Distributor detects RPM, what does this sensor do? When my Thrust Bearing failed on the old Engine, the Flywheel dimples wiped out this Sensor. What do I ask for when replacing? Where's a good place to buy?
