fuel gauge stuck at 3/4 200

Well my fuel gauge is stuck at 3/4 no matter how much gas I have.
When the car is off the needle drops down, but when powered the needle
goes back up.
Is this a proble with the sending unit? or could it be anything else?
Do I need to get a certain brand or are there less expensive generic
units available.
