Clutch cable replacement 140-160 1972

On a 164 it isn't a straight forward job. You really need
to have little teeny tiny hands or you need to take the brake
booster off in order to get to the firewall side of things.
You also realistically need to take at least the clutch pedal
off as well.

I've never done it on a 140. I don't think they wear out
as often because the clutch just isn't as heavy as for the
160.

I did mine with mostly simple tools. I believe I got the
two big nuts off of the bell housing side with a pair of
crescent wrenches. There isn't a lot of room but I did it
from above; it wasn't too hard but it is made easier by
taking the distributor off the block. On the other side I
just put a crescent wrench on one side, wedged it in place,
and used a big wrench on the inside of the car to get the
part off that goes through the firewall. Not pretty and
both sides of the cable required lots of little tiny turns
to get things off, but not too bad either.
