How do they work? 200

The M10 stud is stationary while spinning the nut and it is about 2mm from the end of the stud to back end of the the nut. Since the stud seems to be locked in place can it be fixed? I'm not sure how to get the nut off of the stud so any suggestions would be appreciated.
