Capped electrical socket above valve cover? 700 1988

On my '88 745t, there is a 4-prong electrical socket, covered by a cap, in a bracket above and between the valve cover and intake manifold. What's it for?

Diagnostics? My car doesn't have a check engine light but are codes generated and stored in the ECU? I haven't read anything about retrieving codes on this year model.

Thanks,
