Rich,

I believe that if the problem is really in the AMM, you can disconnect it WITH THE IGNITION TURNED OFF, then restart it and it will run fairly smooth - but won't have much power. This is referred to as the "limp-home" mode.

If you have an ohm meter, you may be able to find out what the resistance readings should be across the contacts and check it out.
