What do you mean by 'pull in' and 'drop'? 200 1985

I thought the relay was purely an electrical device (like a little circuit board) and not electo-mechanical. I am not very adept at electronics or mechanics for that matter but hope to learn all I can. It would be nice to be able to troubleshoot problems without being intimidated. I'm learning more from this web site than from technical college. Thanks!
