700 vs. 900

"I know what a 940 looks like."

Who said you didn't?

"Please be as broad or narrow as you want to be..."

So, I was broad, and I was answering in mechanical terms. When I state "940 trim level", that automatically says "940", not "960". That automatically says 4 cylinder engine, not six cylinder engine. In the US market, EVERY SINGLE 940 had a four cylinder engine; same as the 740 (but eventually better even). And EVERY 960 had a six cylinder engine; a totally different powertrain. As I detailed in the tail of my post, the 960 is a different animal.

In the earlier part of my post, I said:

"The 900 in 940 trim, is fundamentally the same car as the 740, with little improvements along the way. That's a broad brush stroke, but you get the picture. Similarly, the 940 Turbo is very similar to the 740 Turbo."

Mechanically:

740 Turbo is similar to 940 Turbo
740 N.A. is similar to 940 N.A.

There are some small mechanical and electronic differences between the two, but they are basically the same car. The EFI system can have some differences, but basically the 940 is the top of the heap when it comes to Volvo's rear wheel drive product. Since you seem up to date on the car, you're well aware of the cosmetic and safety improvements of the 940 line.
