Leaking windshield? 200 1987

Hi Erling!
The seal is actually the black glue on the back side of the windshield glass. The trim, as Don says, is just there to give the car a finished look. The glass doesn't quite extend to the edges of the opening, and the trim just covers this space. You can always spray the car with a water hose and look for leaks inside if you suspect water is entering the cabin somewhere.
If the windshield is in need of replacement from chips or cracks, consider installing the new style (1991-1993) that has black rubber trim bonded to the glass. Here, they are only about $10 more. The installation is usually easier because that aluminum trim is difficult to get back on (as you have found out).
Good luck!
