This happened and the check engine light didn't come on? If the check engine light is on what are the codes. Check them out in the FAQ.
I am not aware that special tools are needed to change the fuel filter. 25K is not alot of miles on a fuel filter unless you ran into a tank of bad gas.

Loose timing belt, the engine would quit. Jumped timing, should be a very very remote chance. Have you checked out the AMM or the RPM sensor? Let the board know what you find out.
