Not all codes cause the Check Engine light to go on. The diagnostic system is divided into sections -fuel (pin #2), ignition (pin #6) and for later cars ABS (pin #3). Each section can store up to three codes (all codes for California) and they are persistent for that section until reset. If you haven't already found it, refer to the 700/900 FAQ feature section here for additional information.
You can easily have idle problems without any codes. May I suggest poking around in the FAQ section for tips on dealing with that (hint: dirty throttle body, sticky idle air control valve).
