Not long after replacing my ball joints I did the rear a-arm bushings, with friend. After a visual inspection on my wife's '92 it was clear that the rubber was separating from the metal part of the bushing. The front bushing doesn't get the same type of forces that the rear gets and my friend said "they don't wear out, so leave 'em in." Which I did and it doesn't keep me up at night, the car definitely feels tighter, I need to do the rear too.
So if it's never been done on your '86 it is probably time, do it all, replace the tie rod ends too and the sway bar bushings, it's all easy.
